Clenney, who was previously facing a second-degree murder charge, accepted a plea deal in a Miami courtroom on Monday. Under the agreement, she will serve six years behind bars followed by five years of probation.
As part of the sentence, Clenney will also undergo mental health and substance abuse evaluations and treatment after her release. She has additionally been barred from financially benefiting from the case.
Obumseli was stabbed to death inside the couple’s Miami apartment in April 2022. Clenney was arrested several days later in Hawaii and charged with second-degree murder.
Throughout the case, Clenney maintained that she acted in self-defence, alleging that Obumseli had been abusive. Her lawyer, Frank Prieto, previously argued that she threw the knife in an attempt to protect herself.
“It shows the court that our client is in fact credible, her self-defense is credible, and the action she took that night was necessary to save her own life,” Prieto said in 2024.
However, Larry Handfield, an attorney representing Obumseli’s family, disputed the self-defence claim, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the stabbing did not support Clenney’s account.
The case attracted widespread attention, with prosecutors presenting footage of confrontations between the couple and other evidence highlighting the troubled nature of their relationship.
Clenney’s lawyers announced the plea agreement in late July as the case approached trial.
Reacting to the agreement, Obumseli’s family attorney said, “Pleading guilty and accepting full responsibility will begin the process of bringing closure to a very tragic life-changing event for the Obumseli family.”
